FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)

What is QASQAS is an engineering testing laboratory in Kenya

QAS stands for Quality Assurance Systems Ltd

QAS provide Testing and Inspection services in the following sectors:

  • NDT – Non destructive testing
  • Weld (WPS/WPQR) qualification test
  • Compression testing
  • Hydrostatic test (leakage testing)
  • Pressure vessel & engineering inspection
  • Quality Assurance and expediting
  • Third party quality audit and expert witness
  • Protective coating test
  • Calibration services
  • Noise mapping

QAS LTD is accredited in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025. QAS comprises a highly professional team of qualified engineers, engineering technologists, inspectors and non destructive testing technicians.

The combination of these professionals from different speciality areas ensures that clients are served by implementation of the most cost effective inspection regime that will comply with regulatory requirements.

WHAT IS CALIBRATION?

Calibration is a comparison between measurements – one of known magnitude or correctness made or set with one device and another measurement made in a similar way as possible with a second device.

To improve the quality of the calibration and have the results accepted by outside organizations it is desirable for the calibration and subsequent measurements to be “traceable” to the internationally defined measurements units.

Establishing traceability is accomplished by a formal comparison to a standard which is directly or indirectly related to national standards (KEBS in the KENYA), international standards, or certified reference materials.

Quality Management Systems call for an effective metrology system which includes formal, periodic and documented calibration of all measuring instruments. ISO 9000 and ISO 17025 sets of standards require that these traceable actions are to a high level and set out how they can be quantified.

TRAINING DIVISION IN NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING
QAS provides Non-Destructive testing and training services.

ULTRASONIC TESTING
INTRODUCTION
Uses transmission of high-frequency sound waves into material to detect imperfections within or to locate changes in material properties. Most commonly used ultrasonic testing technique is pulse-echo, where sound is introduced into a test object and reflections (echoes) are returned to receiver from internal imperfections or from geometrical surfaces of part.
OBJECTIVES
This course is designed to provide the participant with an understanding of the fundamental theory and applications of ULTRASONIC Testing to qualify the candidate to set up and calibrate UT equipments and to interpret and evaluate test result. It is designed to meet the minimum requirements for certification as a level I&II in UT AS PER THE PRACTICES OF ASNT document NO-SNT-TC-IA.
ULTRASONIC TESTING LEVEL I
COURSES CONTENTS:

  • Introduction to UT testing
  • Fundamental properties of sound
  • Principles of wave propagation
  • Generation of ultrasonic waves
  • Ultrasonic testing methods
  • Ultrasonic testing equipments
  • UT test procedures
  • Variable affecting test results

PRACTICAL

  •    Set up and calibrate the equipment to a technique sheet
  •   Scan a sample, identify discontinuities and complete a report form

ULTRASONIC TESTING LEVEL II
COURSE CONTENT
Theory

  • Simple vibrations and periodic motion
  • Acoustic spectrum
  • Modes of propagation, velocity, frequency and wavelength
  • Generation and detection of ultrasonic waves
  • The cathode ray tube and calibration standards
  • Defect sizing and evaluation techniques
  • Inspection standards and reporting
  • Selection of test techniques
  • Interpretation of code requirements and acceptance criteria

PRACTICAL

  • Set up the equipment, calibrate and carry out a full scan on various samples
  • Compile technique sheets for each sample tested
  • Identify defects
  • Compile written instruction for Level 1 to follow
  • Test samples
  • Interpret and evaluate the findings and compile reports

TARGET GROUP

  • Welding supervisors
  • Welding engineers
  • Managers
  • Welders
  • Quality Assurance Inspectors

EXAMINATION
At the end of the training programme, the participants are required to take up an examination both in theory and practical as recommended by SNT-TC-IA.Successful candidate are eligible to be certified by the employer as level I&II in UT.
